Ripple has reached an important regulatory achievement by obtaining a license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), making it the first blockchain payment provider to gain such recognition.
The announcement made on March 13 follows an initial in-principle approval, which sets the stage for the company to broaden its services in the area.
Reece Merrick, Ripple’s Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, highlighted the significance of the DFSA’s endorsement.
He pointed out that this license allows Ripple to meet the increasing demand for efficient, affordable, and transparent payment solutions in this vital global trade and remittance hub.
This progress contributes to Ripple’s growing regulatory presence, as the company now holds over 60 licenses globally, including a Major Payments Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), a Trust Charter from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration from the Central Bank of Ireland, and various Money Transmitter Licenses (MTLs) across the United States.
Why UAE?
This development represents Ripple’s first complete regulatory license in the Middle East, underscoring its strategic emphasis on compliance and financial innovation.
The UAE is an influential player in the global finance sector, with the World Bank estimating its cross-border payments market to be around $40 billion.
Ripple has observed a growing need for efficient international transactions, as digital asset firms and traditional banks alike look for alternatives to outdated payment systems.
In light of this, Ripple’s authorization in the UAE enables local businesses to utilize its enterprise-grade payment solutions designed to speed up transactions, lower costs, and enhance transparency.
Since setting up its regional headquarters at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) in 2020, Ripple has solidified its presence in the Middle East.
With the region already comprising 20% of its global customer base, this new license positions the company for additional growth in one of the world’s most dynamic financial corridors.
