The suggestion from the Trump administration to establish a U.S. digital asset reserve could see assets like Ethereum and Solana included, a move that has solid reasoning behind it, as pointed out by Jim Iuorio.
Although including Bitcoin (BTC) in the strategic reserve was expected, the addition of Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) may have surprised some investors. However, their presence in this reserve makes sense considering the distinct advantages they bring to the blockchain ecosystem.
Iuorio, Managing Director at TJM Institutional Services, commented on Bloomberg TV that Ethereum’s smart contract features and Solana’s remarkable transaction speeds render them appealing assets in the digital currency space.
“Ethereum is recognized for its smart contract functionality, which supports a variety of decentralized applications,” Iuorio stated. “On the other hand, Solana’s capacity to handle transactions faster than most other networks likely played a significant role in its impressive 1,500% surge from late 2023 to January 2025.”
During the same timeframe, Bitcoin appreciated by 300%, while Ethereum saw a 160% gain. Unsurprisingly, Solana’s performance stands out, leading to the introduction of new trading products focused on Solana as investors pursue better returns in the crypto arena.
“The launch of a Solana futures contract by the CME Group indicates growing market confidence in the asset’s long-term prospects,” he added. “Having the ability to hedge risk through futures is a crucial advancement in legitimizing both Solana and the wider cryptocurrency market.”
Importance of the Proposal
This proposal signals a shift toward broader acceptance of cryptocurrency assets beyond the most widely recognized digital currency. If brought to fruition, the reserve could attract more institutional interest and capital into Ethereum and Solana. As Iuorio emphasized, “Any progress in risk hedging represents a vital step toward validating the asset and the technology it utilizes.”
Trump’s proposal highlights an increasing acknowledgment of the evolving blockchain landscape and the critical role that a variety of digital assets could have within the financial system.
