Grok, the AI chatbot created within Elon Musk’s technology framework, has officially launched on Telegram.
This expansion was revealed in a post on March 26, marking Grok’s first major step outside the original platform.
Elon Musk announced on social media:
“Grok now on Telegram.”
According to Grok, access to the chatbot is currently limited to Telegram users with a premium subscription. Interested individuals can initiate a chat by searching for “GrokAI” within the app.
Nonetheless, features such as “Think” and “DeepSearch” remain exclusive to the original platform or the separate Grok application.
Telegram Achieves 1 Billion Users
This development coincides with Telegram celebrating a remarkable achievement in its user count.
On March 19, the messaging app’s founder Pavel Durov reported that the app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. This growth positions it as the third-largest messaging application globally, following WhatsApp and China’s WeChat.
Durov also highlighted an increase in user engagement, noting that, on average, users now check the app 21 times each day and spend approximately 41 minutes using it daily.
The platform’s financial performance mirrors this expansion, with Telegram recording a profit of $547 million in 2024. Durov emphasized Telegram’s autonomy and consistent development, contrasting it with its larger competitors.
He stated:
“Only WhatsApp remains ahead of us — a diluted imitation of Telegram. For years, they’ve attempted to replicate our success while wasting billions on lobbying and PR to hinder our progress. They were unsuccessful. Telegram has thrived, become profitable, and — unlike our rival — maintained its independence.”
AIs Expand Across Platforms
The growth of Grok aligns with a wider trend among AI enterprises. An increasing number of chatbots are moving from their initial platforms to explore new market opportunities.
In late 2024, OpenAI launched ChatGPT on WhatsApp, including a voice support line for North America, which directly places it in competition with Meta’s own AI assistant.
These changes indicate that the AI landscape is evolving beyond specific platforms. Leading developers are increasingly integrating intelligent assistants into common applications, aiming to establish themselves as the default AI layer for messaging, searches, and interactions.
