The development team behind Cosmos has achieved a significant milestone by executing the first Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) transaction between Cosmos Hub and Ethereum.
On March 26, co-CEO of Cosmos (ATOM) Maghnus Mareneck shared that the initial IBC transaction was successfully completed between Cosmos’s primary blockchain, Cosmos Hub, and Ethereum (ETH). This experiment is part of the broader Eureka upgrade, set to launch alongside IBC-go v10 later this year.
The IBC protocol developed by Cosmos allows different blockchains to interact and seamlessly transfer assets and data among one another. This protocol was first activated in March 2021, following the completion of the Stargate upgrade. Since then, several blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem, such as Terra, Osmosis, and Akash, have adopted IBC, facilitating transfers and communication across these networks.
Today’s milestone is particularly significant as it marks the first IBC interface directly between Cosmos Hub and Ethereum. However, it is important to note that previous connections between external blockchains and Cosmos have been established through indirect means. In April 2024, the Picasso Network created an IBC link connecting Cosmos with Ethereum, and subsequently between Cosmos and Solana. Earlier, Composable Finance bridged Polkadot and Kusama with Cosmos. The overarching goal of Cosmos is to establish IBC as a universal standard for blockchain communication.
